‘Kissing Daniel was great - I can’t pretend that it wasn’t,’ Gemma Arterton talks about falling for 007’s charms

Gemma Arterton: ‘Kissing Daniel was great – I can’t pretend it wasn’t. It was my first day on set and I’d only met him once before – and then suddenly we were expected to kiss. But I just couldn’t get that image of him walking out of the sea in Casino Royale out of my head. He was very cool and I was a giggling mess. I mumbled something like, “I just kissed you!” and he just coolly said, “Yes, you did. And now we have to do it again.” Fortunately, he’s an incredible kisser.’

Daniel Craig: ‘Gemma’s character is great and she plays it to the hilt. She’s an agent who seems clueless, but she’s smarter than we first think. And she teams up well with Bond. He’s hurt and damaged after Vesper Lynd’s death, so thank God for Agent Fields.’

Currently on our screens in BBC1’s Tess Of The D’Urbervilles, 22-year-old Arterton beat 1,500 hopefuls to the role of Agent Fields, the MI6 field operative who falls for 007’s charms before coming to a sticky end.

Although she doesn’t keep her clothes on for long, Fields starts out in a mac-and-knee-high-boots combo that will raise a few eyebrows.

Arterton: ‘The outfit gives the impression that she’s not wearing anything underneath. You see her walk in and you’re like, “Where’s the skirt?” Fields is trying her very best to be professional, but not quite succeeding because she’s very scatty. A bit like me. Sometimes you can’t really connect with Bond girls; you just don’t know people like that in real life. But Agent Fields is witty, funny and a genuinely good person.’
