Gemma Arterton has revealed she insisted on being tied up when she was playing a kidnap victim – even when she didn’t need to be.

The 24-year-old, who shot to fame in the St Trinian’s movie and Bond film Quantum Of Solace, plays a millionaire’s daughter who is kidnapped and held to ransom in gritty British independent film The Disappearance Of Alice Creed, and revealed her method acting required she be bound, even when it wasn’t being shown on camera.

Gemma explained: “One of the things that attracted me to the film originally was the physical aspect of the performance, because I did a lot of physical theatre before I started in film – being tied up, being restricted, those things completely inform what’s happening emotionally, which is really helpful.”

She went on: “So sometimes when the camera’s not on my whole body I’ll still insist that I’m completely tied up, just because it does help that feeling of panic or claustrophobia.”

The Boat That Rocked beauty also appears in Hollywood blockbusters Prince Of Persia and Clash Of The Titans this year, but is very proud of this low-key Brit flick.

She said: “I’d just come off this big action-adventure movie where I play a princess, so I wanted to do something completely different.”

Gemma admits filming the traumatic scenes was hard work but added: “I think, ‘Wow, if I’ve done this, I can do anything now’.”

The Disappearance Of Alice Creed was the feature film debut of writer-director J Blakeson and is released in cinemas on April 30.
