Io Donna: What advice would you give to a girl in search of her own golden moment?
Gemma Arterton: Never allow others to decide things for yourself. If you’re beautiful, you have to prove that you’re brilliant. And keep your integrity: I know it’s hard, but you’ve got to stand firm.

The action-horror movie, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, starring Gemma Arterton and Jeremy Renner, has a follow-up in the works from studios Paramount and MGM.
Once the film crossed the $200 million worldwide box office figure, the news was announced. The $50 million-budgeted film opened in cinemas earlier this year and earned $54 million at the US box office.
As of this weekend, the Tommy Wirkola-directed film has earned $205.8 million.
Reps for both stars confirmed with The Global Dispatch that the scripts will be key and will be reviewed by the actor.

The news comes the same day the revisionist fairy tale starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton crossed $200 million at the global box office. That’s a significant milestone and key to the decision to go ahead with a sequel that is now officially in development; Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters made its bones overseas. While the pic opened at $19.6 million here January 25, and topped out at $54 million domestically on what Paramount said was a $50 million budget. But they loved it overseas, where the film has done over $150 million. That provides a strong hedge for these high concept action films.
Paramount, MGM and MTV Films were behind the first pic, from Gary Sanchez Productions, whose principals Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Kevin Messick are expected to return as producers for the second go-round as is Beau Flynn. Tommy Wirkola wrote and directed the first movie, which after this weekend has grossed $205.8M worldwide.

This is a brand new unseen before shot, but the photoshoot itself isn’t new and was already used in 3 different publications in 2011: Elle (Ukraine) – June 2011, Elle (India) – June 2011 and Be (France) – August 19, 2011. The photoshoot itself can be found over here and it currently graces the layout of our gallery. Unfortunately the French magazine wasn’t very fond of Hansel & Gretel as a film.

Gravesend girl Gemma Arterton is back in fine butt-kicking form as witch killer Gretel in Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters. The Bafta-nominated actress talks about playing a feisty female, working with co-star Jeremy Renner and being a former Bond girl.
If you go down to the woods today, you’re in for a big surprise… because instead of teddy bears having a picnic, nasty witches have set up home in the depths of the dark forests, waiting to steal innocent youngsters.
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, written and directed by Tommy Wirkola, is inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairytale – but with a new twist in the tale.
Following their escape from a cannibalistic witch when they were little, 15 years later brother and sister Hansel and Gretel (Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton) have conquered their fears to become witch killers. They’re fierce, formidably-skilled bounty hunters with a taste for blood and murder, and hell-bent on retribution.
“I love the original fairytale and this starts there, then makes a real departure,” says Arterton. “The film joins up with Hansel and Gretel in the midst of their fame as witch hunters.
“But it’s also a time when they’re starting to wonder who they are and why these terrible things happened to them – which leads them into a very tense situation. It’s really about the two of them and it’s original, a brother and sister bad-ass team.”
After being abandoned by their parents, the siblings have to work together to bring down a coven of witches who are planning the ultimate revenge against humankind – and to gain immortality.
“The sibling relationship is such a great one to explore. Hansel and Gretel have this unstoppable bond but they’re also so different from each other,” explains the actress. “She’s the brains of the operation, he’s the brawn. He’s the joker and the show-off. She’s more the watcher, the researcher, the one who tries to really understand witchcraft. They have to each play to their strengths.”
The 27-year-old, who graduated from RADA in 2007, enjoyed working with Renner, who was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker in 2010.
“Jeremy is so amazing at action, but he also has a lot of sensitivity when needed. He brings a lot of fun to their relationship,” she says. “He’s become a really good friend. We just have a very natural connection, very open-hearted and we trusted each other instantaneously. It was so important for us to get that brother and sister relationship right.” Read the rest of this entry »

Song for Marion is out in UK cinemas today and almost a year ago, I sat down with fabulous British actor Gemma Arternon to chat about her role in the film as choir teacher Elizabet. Gemma is going from strength to strength with previous roles including Disney Princesses, Bond Girls and more recently a Witch Hunter in Hansel and Gretel. She’s also appeared in British independent movies Tamara Drewe and The Disappearance of Alice Creed along with everyone’s favourite St. Trinian’s. In this role, she plays a much more plain an serious character than I think we’ve ever seen from her before and it was great sitting down to discuss what she loved about the role, working on the script and what we can expect from her in the future.
Song for Marion goes in a very different direction but which is guaranteed to make you cry looking at what can happen when a grumpy old man finds himself in a situation where his world is about to be turned upside-down by the terminal illness of his long-term wife.
Song for Marion stars Terence Stamp, Vanessa Redgrave, Christopher Eccleston, Gemma Arterton and is guaranteed to make you cry. Our review is up here and you can read my great and frank interview with the brilliant, beautiful and talented actress that is Gemma Arterton below. You can also read our interview with Director Paul Andrew Williams here. Read the rest of this entry »

Gemma Arterton has said that she will “always be sad” about missing out on playing Mary Poppins at the Olympics.
The Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters star was approached to play the iconic magical character during Danny Boyle’s opening ceremony, but was unable to work it into her schedule. Ultimately, Boyle chose to use several actors to play Mary Poppins.
Arterton told Digital Spy that she has “always wanted to be” the English nanny after growing up with the Disney movie.

Gemma Arterton has revealed that she cracked her co-star Famke Janssen’s ribs while working on their new movie Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.
Arterton told Digital Spy that she inflicted more injuries than she picked up while working on the fantasy action movie.
“I cracked Famke’s ribs in a fight [scene] we did,” Arterton said. “She didn’t tell me at the time, she was very good about it. Afterwards she said, ‘You broke my rib!’ Things like that happen.”
The British actress added that she often found herself “bruised and battered” after filming, and relied on Arnica to get her through the film.
“I remember just overdosing on it,” she joked. “Even if you’re just doing a punch, your neck can get thrown out. It was sort of a gauge of how hard you worked that day if you couldn’t move the next day!”
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters stars Arterton and Jeremy Renner as adult versions of the classic fairytale characters who become bounty hunters.
The movie is showing now in the US, and opens in UK cinemas on Wednesday (February 27).
