We’ve seen Gemma Arterton in two big budget productions this year alone, Clash of the Titans and Prince of Persia, and though neither represent what she’s capable of as an actress, she’ll be back for more. During a chat about her upcoming film, The Disappearance of Alice Creed, Arterton revealed that her role in Clash 2 is likely to be small, and even admitted which of the two blockbusters she liked better.

She confirmed that she’ll appear in the Clash sequel, but didn’t really sound all that enthusiastic about either the movie itself or her contractually obligated role in it:

“I don’t really know what the story is going to be. I think they’re writing it at the moment and they’re going to get back to us, but I don’t think I’m in it much the next movie, which is kind of good.” She added, “It’s going because it was a real success in the box office so they’re going to make another one.”

Acknowledging that Clash was drubbed by critics even though it was a hit, Arterton said, “To be honest, I just don’t know what is going on in the film industry. I was talking to a director yesterday who I love and he always makes brilliant films and he goes, ‘Oh, I struggle to make my films.’ I’m like, ‘How? Your films are amazing! How?’” She continued, “How can something like ‘x’ get made and get so much money put into it and they don’t even know what the script is sometimes and they’re like, ‘Oh yeah, we’ll put up $200 million for that movie.’” Then she threw Prince of Persia into the mix, “My friend was saying, ‘I think Prince of Persia was better than Clash of the Titans,’ and I said, ‘Yeah, I agree.’ And they said, ‘But it wasn’t as big a success,’ and I said, ‘Yeah, I honestly don’t know why.’”

She was even willing to criticize 3D, the technology that both helped Clash make so much money and earned mocking from nearly everyone who saw it: “The boost in the ticket price, but also the fact that you can’t record it. So a lot of people had to go to the cinema to see it. That’s why they’re all doing it, I think honestly, not because it’s the future of filmmaking.”

Arterton certainly has a handle on this industry and the acting to chops to make use of it. If you’ve only seen Clash and Prince, please make an extra effort to hit the theater on August 6th to catch her in The Disappearance of Alice Creed. Sans grandiose effects and costumes, she really shines on screen. Plus, check back next week for my full conversation with Arterton during which she talks about working with such tense material and provides a little preview of what she’s got coming up, other than Clash 2.

Sam Worthington spoke with press on July 9 at the offices of Radical Studios, an LA-based company that has teamed with Worthington’s Full Clip Productions for a number of series, about his upcoming film work, including the sequel to Clash of the Titans that he says will begin shooting early next year.

“[It} will be 3D this time,” said Worthington, making it clear that he himself wasn’t happy with the post-conversion process of the first film, “Shot in 3D. Do put that in and make them f–king aware… When I read Clash 2, they came to me the other day. I said, ‘I kinda dig where it’s going, but can we make the character more of this? Can we make it more of that? Can I get to play a lot more and get involved and have a lot more f–king fun than just being a young man who has to stand there and look pretty?’ I’m sick of doing that, so it’s kind of a case of, ‘How do we make Perseus a lot more fun?’ So we’re sort of shaping it down that track. And Warner Bros. has been nice enough to give us a bit on input.”

Worthington also touched upon the changes that Clash of the Titans went through between the script and the screen.

“The movies always change. It suddenly became a rolling, runaway train in some parts. In regards to the conversion, I’m a Jim Cameron boy, so people know my opinions.”

‘I think she needs to be less mythical and more real and go for the fighting,’ actress says about her character Io’s role in next installment.

“Clash of the Titans” fought its way through withering critical reviews and a ho-hum domestic box office this spring to become a worldwide hit with almost $500 million in ticket sales. For the upcoming sequel, Warner Bros. is changing up key pieces of the franchise — from bringing in a new director to shooting the movie in 3-D rather than converting in it post-production — in a quest to make the next “Clash” even more successful.

Other aspects of the swords-and-sandals epic will remain the same, including the return of Sam Worthington and, as MTV News has now learned, Gemma Arterton.

“I think I am doing the second ‘Clash,’ ” the 24-year-old actress told us while promoting “The Disappearance of Alice Creed.” “I don’t know anything about it yet though. It’s one of those things.”

Arterton went on to give the standard line about how actors that sign on to franchises are optioned for further installments, but in previous interviews, she has indicated that no such deal was in place. In any case, now we know: Arterton will return as Worthington’s love interest Io. What’s more, she’s hoping her character gets to kick a little more ass in the sequel.

“I think she needs to be less mythical and more real and go for the fighting,” she said. “It’s fun, as well, doing all that stuff.”

Dan Mazeau (“The Flash”) and David Leslie Johnson (“Orphan”) are developing the story with Greg Berlanti (“Green Lantern”), and then Mazeau and Johnson will pen the script. Louis Leterrier is out as director, and the top name mentioned to take over helming duties is Jonathan Liebesman (“Battle: Los Angeles”). The film will be shot with 3-D cameras and is being developed for a release as early as spring 2012.

Who will star in U.S. version of Stieg Larsson thriller?

If you’ve seen the Swedish thriller “The Girl Who Played with Fire,” then you know why Stieg Larsson’s best-selling trilogy is a global phenomenon. His first book, “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” started the stampede, and introduced the pierced, tattooed, hacker heroine Lisbeth Salander.

The Swedish film version of “Tattoo” (starring Noomi Rapace) is now on DVD, released to coincide with “Fire” on the big screen and the U.S. hardcover publication of the concluding novel, “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.”

Speculation is rampant on who will play Salander in the imminent Hollywood version directed by David Fincher (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “Panic Room”).

Here are our odds for the actresses rumored in the running to star opposite Daniel Craig.

Kristen Stewart: 100 to 1. The “Twilight” star would top any poll of fan favorites but she recently told David Letterman she’s taken herself out of contention.

Carey Mulligan: 5 to 1. The brilliant Oscar nominee (“An Education”) who stars in “Wall Street 2” this September is considered the leader of the pack.

Natalie Portman: 50 to 1. Another Oscar-nominated actress, Portman may be too well known to successfully submerge herself and transform into Lisbeth.

Megan Fox: 100 to 1. The sultry “Transformers” star would be perfect – she has tattoos, seems made for motorcycles and black leather. If only people thought she could really act.

Gemma Arterton: 20 to 1. Classically trained “Prince of Persia” star has got the chops but may be just too beautifully feminine to be a believable bisexual punker.

Emily Blunt: 20 to 1. A Golden Globe nominee (“Young Victoria”), Blunt has no negatives.

Scarlett Johansson: 40 to 1. The recent Tony award winner is probably too well known to be a viable candidate.

Yo-Landi Vi$$er: 100 to 1. Who? This lead singer of South African rap group Die Antwoord has, according to one report, enchanted Fincher and could be the right wild card.

For the men of the village, she becomes an object of lust, envy, the focus of unrequited love and a seductress… First appearing as a serial in the Guardian, then enlarged and embellished in book form, now Stephen Frears, Gemma Arterton, Dominic Cooper along with a great British cast bring the tale to the big screen.

Tamara Drewe is the contemporary tale of a Londoner returning home to the country – and to her past. Tamara, once a shy, ugly teenager, has reinvented herself as a smouldering femme fatale. When she returns to her old village to sell her late mother’s house, she is barely recognisable to the locals – or to her old flame Andy – and she kick-starts a trail of envy, lust, scandal and gossip wherever she goes. But has she really forgotten who she is – and who she loved?

Tamara is the ultimate modern girl; but for all her independence, ambition and sex appeal it’s actually the vulnerable, shy fish-out-of-water underneath that make her story funny, moving and very human.

Tamara Drewe premieres in French cinemas on July 14, 2010. The UK will have to wait until September 10, 2010.

Following the smash hit of Warner Bros’ Clash of the Titans and its 3D rush job, the studio announced a sequel in April 2010 and a script coming together from screenwriter Greg Berlanti (he’s a busy man these days).

THR says Berlanti will be joined by Dan Mazeau (The Flash, Jonny Quest) and David Leslie Johnson (The Orphan, The Girl with the Red Riding Hood).

The LA Times has more, saying the studio is fast-tracking (read: hurrying again) the sequel and eyeing a start date as early as January 2011 for a Spring 2012 release. Sam Worthington, Gemma Arterton, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, and others are expected to return for the sequel.

Producers are already meeting with directors to take on the sword-and-sandal sequel and Jonathan Liebesman is at the top of the list. He broke into Hollywood as a horror director who made Darkness Falls and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, but Liebesman is behind the camera of the alien invasion flick Battle: Los Angeles.

Louis Leterrier opted out of the sequel, presumably due to problems in post-production like the last-minute 3D conversion and re-edits that dramatically changed the film’s quality. Despite its shortcoming, the original made $486.8 million worldwide after getting hammered by critics (30% on Rotten Tomatoes), particularly for its pop-up book look. At least this one will be shot in 3D, reports the LAT. Titans. Will. Clash. Again.

With the news that Megan Fox is not returning for Transformers 3, speculation has already begun about who may replace her in the now coveted role. After the news hit earlier today, TheWrap posted an interesting bit:

“Prince of Persia” star Gemma Arterton is the front-runner to replace Megan Fox in “Transformers 3,” TheWrap has learned.

An individual close to the casting process says the actress has already had discussions with Bay about the coveted role. Other possible replacements for Fox include models Bar Rafaeli, Miranda Kerr and Brooklyn Decker.

What is interesting about this is that we got a chance to talk to Gemma at the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time premiere on Monday night. We only got her for a few seconds on the red carpet and we took that time to ask her about a possible Clash of the Titans sequel. She gave us a rather cryptic response.

“I don’t know if I am doing ‘Clash of the Titans 2.’ I haven’t seen a script yet so I don’t know if it’s happening,” she said. Cool, that’s a normal reaction, but then we asked whether she would want to make the sequel, and we got this answer: “I’m not saying.”

We thought it was a weird response but moved on until we read the above about the possibility of her starring in Transformers 3. We’re not sure when they would start production on a second Clash of the Titans, and one would think that she could do both, though her reaction may be telling that she’s going to concentrate on the Michael Bay sequel for now.

We’ll have to wait and see how this one turns out! We should know soon who gets the role as shooting is already getting underway.

British actress Gemma Arterton has missed the Cannes premiere of her latest film, Tamara Drewe.

The 24-year-old was kept away from the Riviera by promotional duties for another film, Disney blockbuster Prince Of Persia.

Director Stephen Frears (The Queen) was instead accompanied by Arterton’s co-stars Dominic Cooper and Tamsin Greig.

The film is based on Posy Simmonds’ comic strip, a reworking of Thomas Hardy’s Far From The Madding Crowd.

Frears told reporters at the festival that he was glad the film was not in the running for the prestigious Palme d’Or prize.

“You smile a lot more. I’m not going to lose! I’ve eliminated the possibility of losing!” said the film-maker.

He added that his film would be a hit with overseas audiences, because “they like that sort of British looniness”.

Arterton, who also starred in Bond movie the Quantum of Solace, was in Hollywood on Monday night for the US premiere of Prince of Persia.

The actress has the only female role in the film, alongside actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Sir Ben Kingsley.

Since first coming to attention in the BBC adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles, the actress has become one of the UK’s most in-demand young actresses.

Having completed a well-received stint in West End comedy The Little Dog Laughed this spring, she will appear in three films over the summer blockbuster season – Tamara Drewe, Prince Of Persia and low-budget thriller The Disappearance Of Alice Creed.

The 24-year-old actress, who got engaged to Catelli last year, said she was surprised by his knowledge of fashion when they first got together.

She told UK magazine Reveal: ‘He works on the sales side of things, not so much on the design, creative side, which is really nice. It’s nice to have a boyfriend who really knows about fashion.

‘I remember when we first met, I was talking about Vivienne Westwood, and he gasped and talked back to me about her [sic]. I was like, ‘Oh, my God, he knows about Vivienne Westwood!”

She added: ‘I can have a conversation about fashion with him and it’s not camp, it’s not like me talking to my gay friends about Vivienne Westwood. It’s nice because he’s not in the industry I work in, but he knows about it.’
