The Clash of the Titans sequel, which has been referred to as Wrath of the Titans but a press release today calls Clash of the Titans 2, started shooting this week under the direction of Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles). Sam Worthington returns to star as Perseus, but it looks like Gemma Arterton‘s commitment to Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters means she definitely won’t be in the film, as her name is MIA from the release. We’ve now got a pretty full cast line-up, and a full plot for the film, after the break.

Some of the core cast is returning: Sam Worthington is Perseus; Liam Neeson is Zeus; Danny Huston is Poseidon; and Ralph Fiennes is Hades. Then Rosamund Pike plays maiden turned warrior Andromeda; Edgar Ramirez is Ares; Toby Kebbell is Argenor; and Bill Nighy is Hephaestus. The press release confirms quite a few things that have been talked about over the past couple months, such as Liam Neeson and Danny Huston returning, and the casting of Bill Nighy.

Here’s the plot:

A decade after his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, Perseus—the demigod son of Zeus—is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year old son, Helius. Meanwhile, a struggle for supremacy rages between the gods and the Titans. Dangerously weakened by humanity’s lack of devotion, the gods are losing control of the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father of the long-ruling brothers Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. The triumvirate had overthrown their powerful father long ago, leaving him to rot in the gloomy abyss of Tartarus, a dungeon that lies deep within the cavernous underworld.

Perseus cannot ignore his true calling when Hades, along with Zeus’ godly son, Ares (Edgar Ramírez), switch loyalty and make a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus. The Titans’ strength grows stronger as Zeus’ remaining godly powers are siphoned, and hell is unleashed on earth. Enlisting the help of the warrior Queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike), Poseidon’s demigod son, Argenor (Toby Kebbell), and fallen god Hephaestus (Bill Nighy), Perseus bravely embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus, overthrow the Titans and save mankind.

While the first film suffered a lot of script issues and reworking that hopefully won’t plague this film, Battle: Los Angeles didn’t exactly inspire huge confidence that this sequel will be a big step up from Clash. (I didn’t hate Battle: LA like some did, but would be hard-pressed to call it good.) But hey, at least Toby Kebbell is in this one. He’s great.

According to Box Office Mojo Warner Bros. has pushed the release date of Clash of the Titans 2 back a week from March 23, 2012 to March 30, 2012. The move is likely to give the movie breathing room as in it’s old date it was up against Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games, which is edging closer to filming.

The sequel, currently titled Wrath of the Titans, sees the return of Sam Worthington as Perseus and Gemma Arterton as Io. Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes will also return as Zeus and Hades, and new addition Rosamund Pike will play Andromeda.

Director Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles) recently commented on what direction he wants to take the next film, saying:

For me, taking Greek mythology and all that fantasy and putting it in a real world that’s epic, like Gladiator, like a big Ridley Scott movie, and taking all that fantasy and putting it in, grounding it, making it feel real, that’s the movie that I wanted to see when I walked into Clash 1 and that’s the movie that Clash 2 is gonna be. That’s what I was looking for, I was looking to come in and have a real, intense, visceral kick-ass experience with spectacle but grounded, with great actors, and that’s what the second one will be.

Dan Mazeau (worked on The Flash script for Warner Bros.) and David Johnson (Red Riding Hood) have been working alongside Green Lantern writer Greg Berlanti on the script, so it should be an improvement on the first film.

‘Clash of the Titans 2‘ will be like “‘Gladiator‘ with lots of creatures”.

According to filmmaker Jonathan Liebesman, the movie – which sees Greek warriors fighting against Gods and mythical creatures – will be more “grounded” than last year’s fantasy epic starring Liam Neeson and Gemma Arterton.

He said: “It’s going to be a much more natural, gritty, grounded fantasy movie. Just think ‘Gladiator‘ with lots of creatures, I’m excited. It’s a good opportunity to do something awesome with some great actors in a great genre.”

Sam Worthington recently admitted he is “surprised” a sequel to the film was commissioned.

The Australian actor – who played the role of Perseus in the much maligned 2010 remake – is glad the original film got criticised as it means a follow-up doesn’t have to stick to the same storyline.

He said recently: “The thing is the first film we got criticised a lot for, but now the good thing about the sequel is that we are not beholden to an original story and we can learn from the mistakes of the first and hopefully improve on it.

“I mean there is a surprise that we are making a sequel because of the critical drubbing.”

‘Clash of the Titans 2‘ is scheduled for release in March 2012.

When Clash of the Titans was released this past April, it opened to mediocre reviews before moving on to earn $491 million worldwide. Nobody understands the negativity more than the movie’s lead star, Sam Worthington, who recently told Moviefone that he didn’t exactly disagree with the criticism.

I think the first one, we kind of let down some people. And yeah, I totally agree. The only point of doing a sequel is either the audience demands it or you believe you can better the first one. What we’re setting out to do with this one — the writers and the director and myself — is improve. I think I can act f***ing better, to be honest … Just take all the notes from people that I have been reading about on the ‘net and give them a movie they f***ing want. This one I want to kind of try to satisfy a lot more people.

Worthington says that the upcoming sequel will be better, admitting that “we can improve on it.”

I’ve always said you make movies for an audience, that’s who you make movies for. If the audience is speaking, it’s like the old gladiator thing, they give us the thumbs up/thumbs down, you want to stay alive in that coliseum as long as you can.

Returning alongside Worthington in the sequel is Liam Neeson, who recently revealed that the sequel will be titled Wrath of the Titans and will go into production in March of 2011. The sequel was recently scheduled for a March 30, 2012, release date by Warner Bros. studio.

Jonathan Liebesman will take over the directing duties from Louis Leterrier for Wrath of the Titans, while actors Gemma Arterton and Ralph Fiennes are expected to return as Io and Hades, respectively.

Sam Worthington hopes the ‘Clash of the Titans’ sequel will “rectify the mistakes” the first film made.

The Australian actor – who played Perseus in the critically-slammed but commercially successful movie alongside Liam Neeson and Gemma Arterton – plans to have a different take on the first movie in the upcoming sequel by improving his performance and getting a new haircut.

He told Total Film: “It got roasted but it made half a billion dollars. And when we do the second one we can rectify the mistakes of the first.

“I want to change Perseus. For a star, don’t have a f**ing shaved head. This time I’m going to have ringlets.”

Arterton recently revealed she was looking forward to developing her character Io and hoped she could have more interaction with Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes.

She said: “It’s always interesting, when you’ve done something, to revisit it ’cause you have a different take on it.

“You remember the experience and can develop from there. It will be interesting. I really liked working with the actors, and hopefully I’ll get to work with Ralph and Liam on this next one ’cause I didn’t last time.”

(…) I got to sit down with the producer Basil Iwanyk to talk about Clash of the Titans 2.

(…) He also tells me that he’s incredibly happy with the script for Clash of the Titans 2 and that it takes place 5 or 6 years after the first film and it’ll be more realistic – including the depiction of the monsters. He also reveals Gemma Arterton will be back.

Finally, for people who thought the first Clash of the Titans had some problems… Iwanyk is extremely candid about his thoughts on the first film and why it didn’t completely work. He also reveals why we’ll never see the full set of deleted scenes. So much more after the jump:

Since the interview is over ten minutes, I’ve time indexed the entire thing so you can watch the parts that interest you. The beginning is about the first and second Clash of the Titans and around time index 7:55 it jumps into his other projects.

Producer Basil Iwanyk

    * What happened on Clash of the Titans? What I saw on set wasn’t the version I expected in theaters. Talks about how the critics didn’t love the film and how the 3D was criticized.
* 2:55 – I ask about the role of the Gods in the movie (admits they never had it figured out in the script stage).
* 3:05 – Are all the deleted scenes lost forever or will we eventually see them.
* 4:00 – How is the script coming along on Clash 2 and is Gemma Arterton in the movie (she is). Also talks about how the script is coming along on the new one.
* 6:50 – Confirms they are filming again in London and in some of the same places.
* 7:00 – What is the tone of the sequel and how does it compare to the first? Says it will be based more in reality and more real. Says the first one was comic booky while the second one will feel more real – including the depiction of the monsters.
* 7:45 – Says 5 or 6 years will have passed from the first film.

“Making Clash Of The Titans was also fun but it was a lot warmer.

“It was mostly filmed in Tenerife, where we did all the battles with the giant scorpions. It was great.

“We were either working or drinking beers in the evening, not bad. We were basically spending 24 hours together and became a tight group – Sam, Nicholas Hoult, Liam Cunningham, all of us.

“We were competing all the time, doing sports and all kinds of stuff.

“Gemma Arterton was the only girl but she became just one of the boys. She was good fun and took part in everything.

“The film was great fun to make. It’s not every day you get to dress up in skirts and pretend it’s 2000 years ago, but it did help that everyone was dressed up in a funny way. We were all in silly dresses and with big scorpions all over the place. We forgot it was 2009 very fast.

“It was also hard work. If you’re not bruised up then you’re not doing an action film in a real way.

“We were bruised all the time, but that was nothing compared with the stunt guys, they were really battered.

“We got a chance to do a lot of it ourselves, and they tried to teach us to be comfortable with the stunts.”

In just the past two years, Gemma Arterton’s been drowned in crude oil (in Quantum of Solace), stabbed to death (Clash of the Titans), and dropped off a cliff (Prince of Persia) — is it any wonder she’s tired of blockbusters? “I don’t want to sound too dismissive of big movies because they are fun and you know, they’re business moves and you can’t just be artistic all the time,” she tells us. “But I am more interested in doing only smaller films right now.” Up next for Arterton: serious films with girls’ names in the titles! The Disappearance of Alice Creed, an indie thriller in which she plays the titular kidnapping victim, is out this week. In the fall, she’ll star in Stephen Frears’s Tamara Drewe. Vulture spoke with her during a recent visit to New York about Creed, the movie she hopes to make next (Luca Guadagnino’s Corsica 72), and why she’s not disappointed she wasn’t cast in Transformers 3.

When Megan Fox was fired from her role in Transformers 3 in May, it only took the Internet a few minutes to cast you as her replacement. Was that ever a possibility?
I didn’t even hear anything until I went to meet with another director for something else. He asked, “So, you’re doing Transformers?” I was like, “I’m sorry, what?”

Would you even have considered the role (which eventually went to Rosie Huntington-Whiteley)?
[Makes a face and shakes her head.] Megan Fox is such a sex symbol — I don’t feel comfortable playing a role like that. I don’t want to be about the way I look — my body, my hair, my makeup, all those boring things.

You’re certainly going in the opposite direction of that with Alice Creed.
I had just finished Prince of Persia and I wanted to shake it all off. Sometimes you do these popcorn movies — and even though a lot of credit needs to go to the people who make them — the dialogue is very wooden, stiff and they’re not hard work. [Alice Creed] was gut-wrenching and horrible, but ultimately really satisfying work. I needed to make sure I could act. And because of that, I got my next script, Corsica 72, to be directed by Luca Guadagnino [I Am Love]. I wasn’t supposed to tell you that, but it’s so fucking good — the best female role I’ve read. It’s about these two friends who become enemies and the reason they become enemies is because of this girl, and that’s me. I’m hoping it gets made.

Still, you’re gagged and tied to a bed for most of the movie. That couldn’t have been fun either.
We shot it in sequence, so the first week I had to do all of that horrible stuff. I remember one day being in tears all day, because we were doing a particular scene, to the point where I couldn’t even see anymore.

Which scene was that?
Without giving it away, it’s the betrayal scene where I’m holding that bloody gun. I was holding it for eight hours, which was really heavy. My poor old arms were just like going, “Oh my God!” Your body’s not supposed to go through that shit; you’re not supposed to cry for eight hours a day. I would go home and I’d be absolutely shattered, but then feeling good because I’d never done work like this before. I was proud of myself.

I’ve heard you were actually punched by a co-star …
Eddie Marsan punched me by accident — he was mortified. I had a nosebleed and I was handcuffed at the time, and I just really panicked. But we hadn’t finished the scene, so the next day we had to go back to it and so I was really scared — I was convinced that he was gonna punch again. Never in my short career, I’ve never had that experience where I wasn’t sure if I was acting or if it was real. I think you can see the real fear in that scene.

Most of Alice Creed happens in the same room. How claustrophobic was the set?
It was exactly what you saw. What was worse was that we made it on the Isle of Man, which is this very small island; they make a lot of movies there for tax purposes. And [the set] had a tin roof and there was a reverb. Every time I screamed, it echoed around the whole place, so we had to dub the whole film.

Really?
Everything you see in the film is dubbed. I remember when they told me we had to do it. I was like, “Are you serious? I can’t replicate my performance in one day, and lip-synch it, and make it not sound like shit.” And anyone can see dubbing. I know I can see it and it immediately takes me out of the experience — Oh, now it’s dubbed. I had been doing Clash of the Titans and they were like, “We need you to dub it now,” so I came back and dubbed the whole film in a day. I had to get myself into that state and scream my lungs out. It was a real shame, but I think that you can’t tell.

You die in a lot of your movies. What is it about you that makes filmmakers say, “Let’s hire her, then kill her?”
No, you know what they do? They kill me, and then they bring me back to life. I’m resurrected, like Jesus Christ. Originally in Clash of the Titans, I was gonna die and that was that. And I was happy because I love doing deaths. But they realized they might do a sequel, so they brought me back to life. It’s so funny … I’ve done about four deaths in films now, and I think it’s quite good because then it’s sort of a memorable moment in the film. I’m trying to think if in my next movies I die. No, I don’t think I do die. That’s good.

We’ve seen Gemma Arterton in two big budget productions this year alone, Clash of the Titans and Prince of Persia, and though neither represent what she’s capable of as an actress, she’ll be back for more. During a chat about her upcoming film, The Disappearance of Alice Creed, Arterton revealed that her role in Clash 2 is likely to be small, and even admitted which of the two blockbusters she liked better.

She confirmed that she’ll appear in the Clash sequel, but didn’t really sound all that enthusiastic about either the movie itself or her contractually obligated role in it:

“I don’t really know what the story is going to be. I think they’re writing it at the moment and they’re going to get back to us, but I don’t think I’m in it much the next movie, which is kind of good.” She added, “It’s going because it was a real success in the box office so they’re going to make another one.”

Acknowledging that Clash was drubbed by critics even though it was a hit, Arterton said, “To be honest, I just don’t know what is going on in the film industry. I was talking to a director yesterday who I love and he always makes brilliant films and he goes, ‘Oh, I struggle to make my films.’ I’m like, ‘How? Your films are amazing! How?’” She continued, “How can something like ‘x’ get made and get so much money put into it and they don’t even know what the script is sometimes and they’re like, ‘Oh yeah, we’ll put up $200 million for that movie.’” Then she threw Prince of Persia into the mix, “My friend was saying, ‘I think Prince of Persia was better than Clash of the Titans,’ and I said, ‘Yeah, I agree.’ And they said, ‘But it wasn’t as big a success,’ and I said, ‘Yeah, I honestly don’t know why.’”

She was even willing to criticize 3D, the technology that both helped Clash make so much money and earned mocking from nearly everyone who saw it: “The boost in the ticket price, but also the fact that you can’t record it. So a lot of people had to go to the cinema to see it. That’s why they’re all doing it, I think honestly, not because it’s the future of filmmaking.”

Arterton certainly has a handle on this industry and the acting to chops to make use of it. If you’ve only seen Clash and Prince, please make an extra effort to hit the theater on August 6th to catch her in The Disappearance of Alice Creed. Sans grandiose effects and costumes, she really shines on screen. Plus, check back next week for my full conversation with Arterton during which she talks about working with such tense material and provides a little preview of what she’s got coming up, other than Clash 2.

Sam Worthington spoke with press on July 9 at the offices of Radical Studios, an LA-based company that has teamed with Worthington’s Full Clip Productions for a number of series, about his upcoming film work, including the sequel to Clash of the Titans that he says will begin shooting early next year.

“[It} will be 3D this time,” said Worthington, making it clear that he himself wasn’t happy with the post-conversion process of the first film, “Shot in 3D. Do put that in and make them f–king aware… When I read Clash 2, they came to me the other day. I said, ‘I kinda dig where it’s going, but can we make the character more of this? Can we make it more of that? Can I get to play a lot more and get involved and have a lot more f–king fun than just being a young man who has to stand there and look pretty?’ I’m sick of doing that, so it’s kind of a case of, ‘How do we make Perseus a lot more fun?’ So we’re sort of shaping it down that track. And Warner Bros. has been nice enough to give us a bit on input.”

Worthington also touched upon the changes that Clash of the Titans went through between the script and the screen.
