“Clash of the Titans” starlet and ex-Bond girl Gemma Arterton said last night during the Manhattan premiere of her newest effort “The Disappearance of Alice Creed” that she’s enamoured with New York.

“My friend told me to go to this hot dog store — there was a secret phone booth in the store. After we said how many people there were a secret door opened. I loved it,” the 24-year-old British-born brunette stunner said.

Niteside told Arterton she was talking about PDT, the secret speakeasy on St. Marks Place. The starlet also waxed nostalgic about her first visit to the city.

“The first time I came here I was 17 with my father, and he said I was destined to move here,” smiled Gemma. “I have a real love affair with it but I’m too close to London. It’s just got a cooler vibe than London.“

In “The Disappearance of Alice Creed” two masked men seize a young woman (Arterton). They bind and gag her and take her to an abandoned, sound-proofed apartment. She is Alice Creed, daughter of a millionaire. Her kidnappers, the coldly efficient Vic and his younger accomplice Danny, have worked out a meticulous plan. But Alice is not going to play the perfect victim – she’s not giving in without a fight.

Gemma was joined at the posh Crosby Street Hotel by America Ferrara, Rosanna Scotto, Jill Martin, Molly Sims, Tara Subkoff, Erin Fetherston, Eric Villency, and more guests. Ferrera coming to support on the heels of her own “The Dry Land” premiere last night.

The young actress also told us that it’s not much easier to deal with celebrity in England. “It can be quite harsh in London, with the paparazzi and the tabloids, but you get used to it.”

The overseas star expressed that dispite her English roots she looks to actors in the U.S. for inspiration. “My favorite living American actress is Julianne Moore. I mean some of the best actors in the world are from the United States.”

Former Bond girl Gemma Arterton suffered for her art filming new movie The Disappearance of Alice Creed – she was left with rope burns and cuts after playing a defenceless kidnapping victim.

The British actress spent hours gagged and bound on set, but admits that while the shoot was at times physically painful, it also allowed her to catch up on her rest as she filmed the majority of her scenes on a bed.

She tells WENN, “Obviously it’s physically draining because I was in a constant state of tension when making the movie…

“I was constantly tied up in myself (sic) and then physically I had tiny rope burns and I started getting these little cuts on my mouth from the ball gag, so they actually loosened the ropes and stuff.

“I’d just come off from doing an action movie so it was so nice to be laying in bed (tied up)! You know everybody else is pottering around and doing their thing and I’m just lying there. Sometimes I’d fall asleep while they’re setting up the next shot with handcuffs on!”

But Arterton insisted on staying tied up in between takes after realising how time consuming and cumbersome it was for producers to keep untying her – and she credits the restrictive shoot with helping her to develop her character.

She says, “It was a hassle (to be untied) to be honest, rather than, ‘I want to be this character’, because I’m not like that. I do like to snap out of it (being in character) and talk. I was just like, ‘Ah don’t worry about untying me,’ because it would take about 10 minutes to untie, then retie so I just stayed there. It was easier that way and made the work faster…

“It was really helpful as well because in some of the scenes where I had to feel claustrophobic and trapped, the physical restraint really enabled and aided the acting.”

It’s not the first scars Arterton has acquired on a movie set – she was covered in battle wounds from fight scenes for this year’s (10) action blockbuster Clash of the Titans.

We’ve seen Gemma Arterton in two big budget productions this year alone, Clash of the Titans and Prince of Persia, and though neither represent what she’s capable of as an actress, she’ll be back for more. During a chat about her upcoming film, The Disappearance of Alice Creed, Arterton revealed that her role in Clash 2 is likely to be small, and even admitted which of the two blockbusters she liked better.

She confirmed that she’ll appear in the Clash sequel, but didn’t really sound all that enthusiastic about either the movie itself or her contractually obligated role in it:

“I don’t really know what the story is going to be. I think they’re writing it at the moment and they’re going to get back to us, but I don’t think I’m in it much the next movie, which is kind of good.” She added, “It’s going because it was a real success in the box office so they’re going to make another one.”

Acknowledging that Clash was drubbed by critics even though it was a hit, Arterton said, “To be honest, I just don’t know what is going on in the film industry. I was talking to a director yesterday who I love and he always makes brilliant films and he goes, ‘Oh, I struggle to make my films.’ I’m like, ‘How? Your films are amazing! How?’” She continued, “How can something like ‘x’ get made and get so much money put into it and they don’t even know what the script is sometimes and they’re like, ‘Oh yeah, we’ll put up $200 million for that movie.’” Then she threw Prince of Persia into the mix, “My friend was saying, ‘I think Prince of Persia was better than Clash of the Titans,’ and I said, ‘Yeah, I agree.’ And they said, ‘But it wasn’t as big a success,’ and I said, ‘Yeah, I honestly don’t know why.’”

She was even willing to criticize 3D, the technology that both helped Clash make so much money and earned mocking from nearly everyone who saw it: “The boost in the ticket price, but also the fact that you can’t record it. So a lot of people had to go to the cinema to see it. That’s why they’re all doing it, I think honestly, not because it’s the future of filmmaking.”

Arterton certainly has a handle on this industry and the acting to chops to make use of it. If you’ve only seen Clash and Prince, please make an extra effort to hit the theater on August 6th to catch her in The Disappearance of Alice Creed. Sans grandiose effects and costumes, she really shines on screen. Plus, check back next week for my full conversation with Arterton during which she talks about working with such tense material and provides a little preview of what she’s got coming up, other than Clash 2.

Sam Worthington spoke with press on July 9 at the offices of Radical Studios, an LA-based company that has teamed with Worthington’s Full Clip Productions for a number of series, about his upcoming film work, including the sequel to Clash of the Titans that he says will begin shooting early next year.

“[It} will be 3D this time,” said Worthington, making it clear that he himself wasn’t happy with the post-conversion process of the first film, “Shot in 3D. Do put that in and make them f–king aware… When I read Clash 2, they came to me the other day. I said, ‘I kinda dig where it’s going, but can we make the character more of this? Can we make it more of that? Can I get to play a lot more and get involved and have a lot more f–king fun than just being a young man who has to stand there and look pretty?’ I’m sick of doing that, so it’s kind of a case of, ‘How do we make Perseus a lot more fun?’ So we’re sort of shaping it down that track. And Warner Bros. has been nice enough to give us a bit on input.”

Worthington also touched upon the changes that Clash of the Titans went through between the script and the screen.

“The movies always change. It suddenly became a rolling, runaway train in some parts. In regards to the conversion, I’m a Jim Cameron boy, so people know my opinions.”

‘I think she needs to be less mythical and more real and go for the fighting,’ actress says about her character Io’s role in next installment.

“Clash of the Titans” fought its way through withering critical reviews and a ho-hum domestic box office this spring to become a worldwide hit with almost $500 million in ticket sales. For the upcoming sequel, Warner Bros. is changing up key pieces of the franchise — from bringing in a new director to shooting the movie in 3-D rather than converting in it post-production — in a quest to make the next “Clash” even more successful.

Other aspects of the swords-and-sandals epic will remain the same, including the return of Sam Worthington and, as MTV News has now learned, Gemma Arterton.

“I think I am doing the second ‘Clash,’ ” the 24-year-old actress told us while promoting “The Disappearance of Alice Creed.” “I don’t know anything about it yet though. It’s one of those things.”

Arterton went on to give the standard line about how actors that sign on to franchises are optioned for further installments, but in previous interviews, she has indicated that no such deal was in place. In any case, now we know: Arterton will return as Worthington’s love interest Io. What’s more, she’s hoping her character gets to kick a little more ass in the sequel.

“I think she needs to be less mythical and more real and go for the fighting,” she said. “It’s fun, as well, doing all that stuff.”

Dan Mazeau (“The Flash”) and David Leslie Johnson (“Orphan”) are developing the story with Greg Berlanti (“Green Lantern”), and then Mazeau and Johnson will pen the script. Louis Leterrier is out as director, and the top name mentioned to take over helming duties is Jonathan Liebesman (“Battle: Los Angeles”). The film will be shot with 3-D cameras and is being developed for a release as early as spring 2012.

Q. But spending hours with that gag in your mouth must have been awful?
Gemma Arterton: Well, you don’t spend hours in it… you take it out between takes. There were times when it did get a bit much. The mummification scene was hardcore, because I also had the gag in. It felt weird. But it was a really trustworthy situation. I never felt at any point like I was being taken advantage of. I was in such good hands. I could also spit the gag out whenever I wanted to. On the first couple of days, I remember saying: “Yeah, put the gag on tight!” But then I was: “Actually, no…” It tasted horrible as well… of Listerine or something weird. It’s quite funny, though, because I’m kind of a chatty person and the props guys would have to handcuff me and tie me up and sometimes I’d just be chatting and they’d just pop it back in… like: “OK now, shut up!” [Laughs]

Lucy Bevan on Gemma Arterton

I remember vividly the first time I saw Gemma Arterton on stage, early 2007. It was not a great play, in a dingy basement studio at drama school—the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art—and I had missed half a dinner party to be there, so I was quite grumpy. Gemma then walked on stage and shone out.

At the time, I was casting this British comedy called “St. Trinians,” with Rupert Everett, Colin Firth, and Russell Brand. The actress we had cast to play the lead girl had just dropped out, and I went from feeling awful about that to being literally thrilled by the opportunity to cast someone completely fresh and new.

Gemma did brilliantly in her auditions, held her own at a fairly intimidating table reading with Rupert Everett, and—with a little persuasion of the director and producer that casting a complete unknown as their leading lady was a good idea—she got the part. From the first day I met her, through those first auditions, and now with all the great and well-deserved success that she has had, Gemma has always been one of the most delightful, funny, charming, honest, and ballsy girls I have ever had the pleasure of spending time with. I absolutely adore her and love the fact she is doing so well.

Lucy Bevan got her first job, as a runner, by literally knocking on doors in Soho, London. She then became assistant to producer Sarah Radclyffe when Radclyffe made Tim Roth’s directorial debut, “The War Zone.” After a few years, Bevan decided her heart lay in the casting process. She worked for Mary Selway for four years, calling it “the finest training I could have wished for.” Bevan’s first film was “Chromophobia,” for Martha Fiennes, followed by “The Duchess,” the “St. Trinians” movies, and “An Education.” Recently she contributed to casting on “Pirates of the Caribbean 4.”
