Gemma Arterton, 24 year old Bond girl and British rising star; most recently seen in blockbuster Tamara Drewe (in Italy out on the 5th of January), an adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s nineteenth century novel Far from the Madding Crowd; speaks to Swide about her love of Italian style and adopted nuances from her new Italian husband.
Swide: What projects are you currently working on Gemma?
Gemma: Currently I’m working on a play called “The Master Builder” by Ibsen. We’re about midway through the run and it’s playing at the Almeida Theatre in Islington, London. Read the rest of this entry »
Gemma Arterton is photographed before (left) and immediately after reading a moving testimony written by a child from one of the poorest parts of South Africa. The actress was at London’s Old Vic theatre last month, among a cast of 17 who provided voices for the work of Dramatic Need — a charity that uses the arts to help young people in South Africa and Rwanda.

The star of this sparse modern-dress production of Ibsen’s poetic 1892 play is Gemma Arterton.
She’s effusive and assertive, yet also haunting; her brown eyes dance with an ambiguous light and her gestures, though often expansive, feel wholly authentic.
Arterton’s character Hilde Wangel proves an antagonistic flirt. She captures this paradoxical quality with a delicate touch, investing the part with luminous intensity. Read the rest of this entry »

4 out of 5 stars
Ibsen’s weird, autobiographical 1892 play gets a radical makeover at the Almeida. Out go the oppressive furniture, the frock coats and even the statutory intervals. Instead we get a straight-through, 105-minute version that has the quality, like an earlier Macbeth from the actor-director team of Stephen Dillane and Travis Preston, of a propulsive dream.
On the realistic level, Ibsen’s plot is relatively clear. Solness, an ageing architect fearful of the new generation, finds his home invaded by the 23-year-old Hilde Wangel. Claiming the kingdom he promised her as a teenager, Hilde spurs him on to a climactic tower-climbing feat that proves his downfall. But what does it all mean? Read the rest of this entry »
Gemma Arterton ditches the hot pants for a serious turn treading the boards in London play
She complained recently of a lack of serious roles and being treated like a ‘piece of a**’ by Hollywood.
So it is unsurprising that Gemma Arterton’s latest role is as far from Tinseltown as possible.
The former Bond girl is starring in The Master Builder at the Almeida Theatre in London, in a meaty role that sees her stretch her acting chops and appear make-up free. Read the rest of this entry »
