The star of this sparse modern-dress production of Ibsen’s poetic 1892 play is Gemma Arterton.
She’s effusive and assertive, yet also haunting; her brown eyes dance with an ambiguous light and her gestures, though often expansive, feel wholly authentic.
Arterton’s character Hilde Wangel proves an antagonistic flirt. She captures this paradoxical quality with a delicate touch, investing the part with luminous intensity. Read the rest of this entry »

4 out of 5 stars
Ibsen’s weird, autobiographical 1892 play gets a radical makeover at the Almeida. Out go the oppressive furniture, the frock coats and even the statutory intervals. Instead we get a straight-through, 105-minute version that has the quality, like an earlier Macbeth from the actor-director team of Stephen Dillane and Travis Preston, of a propulsive dream.
On the realistic level, Ibsen’s plot is relatively clear. Solness, an ageing architect fearful of the new generation, finds his home invaded by the 23-year-old Hilde Wangel. Claiming the kingdom he promised her as a teenager, Hilde spurs him on to a climactic tower-climbing feat that proves his downfall. But what does it all mean? Read the rest of this entry »
Gemma Arterton ditches the hot pants for a serious turn treading the boards in London play
She complained recently of a lack of serious roles and being treated like a ‘piece of a**’ by Hollywood.
So it is unsurprising that Gemma Arterton’s latest role is as far from Tinseltown as possible.
The former Bond girl is starring in The Master Builder at the Almeida Theatre in London, in a meaty role that sees her stretch her acting chops and appear make-up free. Read the rest of this entry »

She’s a council estate girl now on the cusp of becoming one of Britain’s best actresses. Here, Gemma Arterton reveals how she’s coping with success, star-struck strangers and her most demanding role yet.
There is a point, towards the end of my interview with British actress Gemma Arterton, where I get the distinct urge to lunge across the table and hug her. This feeling is rare – and usually reserved for family and friends, might I add – but there’s something about this girl that you can’t help but love.
Of course she’s beautiful, with those perfectly plump lips and brooding brown eyes. And she has clothes to die for – today, it’s skinny jeans with a Mulberry coat and scarf that were sent to her (“That’s one of the best perks”). But it’s so much more than that.

After a succession of big budget films have made her one of Britain’s most recognisable young actresses, Gemma Arterton is heading to the off-West End Almeida theatre, where she can truly be herself, finds Caroline Bishop.
She has been a Bond girl, taken leading roles in British film Tamara Drewe and television drama Tess Of The D’Urbervilles and, at 24, has the sort of movie star status that makes young girls scream when they see her in the street (it happened to her on the tube the morning we meet). Yet despite all this, Gemma Arterton says that playing Hilde Wangel in Ibsen’s The Master Builder at the off-West End Almeida theatre is “the most important thing I’ve ever done in my life”.
“Yesterday I had a bit of a breakdown actually when I left rehearsals because it was really getting to me,” she says. “It’s a really strange play in that you have to go really deep, to beyond your mind; it gets into you. I left rehearsal and I just burst into tears in the car. I phoned my husband and I was like ‘I don’t know what to do!’… I went home and he bought me some ice-cream and it was fine.” Read the rest of this entry »

Gemma Arterton on the benefits of growing up, and her journey from St Trinian’s head girl to Ibsen heroine
The other day Gemma Arterton attended an audition with “a very famous actor”. The actor looked at her CV, and said: “You’re in this for the art, aren’t you? I can see that from [the fact that you did] St Trinian’s.” Arterton, who is 24, tells me this with only the merest trace of indignation. “I think he was testing me,” she says. “But I’ve only been working for three years, and you can’t be creative at the beginning of your career. I left drama school [Rada] with a lot of debt. My student loan was £25,000, and I come from the kind of family where you’re not allowed to be in debt. So when you get offered a job, you’re going to say ‘yes’. It’s only now I can reflect on what I want to do next.” Read the rest of this entry »
