Gemma Arterton on the benefits of growing up, and her journey from St Trinian’s head girl to Ibsen heroine

The other day Gemma Arterton attended an audition with “a very famous actor”. The actor looked at her CV, and said: “You’re in this for the art, aren’t you? I can see that from [the fact that you did] St Trinian’s.” Arterton, who is 24, tells me this with only the merest trace of indignation. “I think he was testing me,” she says. “But I’ve only been working for three years, and you can’t be creative at the beginning of your career. I left drama school [Rada] with a lot of debt. My student loan was £25,000, and I come from the kind of family where you’re not allowed to be in debt. So when you get offered a job, you’re going to say ‘yes’. It’s only now I can reflect on what I want to do next.”

Arterton followed her turn as St Trinian’s head girl with that of Strawberry Fields in Bond film Quantum of Solace. But this year has a somewhat different flavour – and don’t let the men’s magazines, who love nothing better than to stick her in fishnets and something tight by Alexander McQueen, tell you otherwise. Yes, she briefly wore supremely short shorts when she took the starring role in Stephen Frears’s Tamara Drewe. But the film, all dappled sunshine and bitchy literary types, was hardly a blockbuster. And now, as the nights draw in, she is to appear as Hilde Wangel in Ibsen’s The Master Builder. In case you don’t know it, this isn’t just ordinary Ibsen, dark as a forest, sombre as a priest; it’s Ibsen in his difficult late period, chilly and strange as a hoar frost. “People say that it’s one of the best female roles ever,” she says. “I just have to trust myself that I can do it.”

Arterton is a working-class girl from Gravesend, Kent – her mum was a cleaner, her dad a welder – and the only thing about snooty Tamara with which she identified was the fact that she’d swapped the provinces for London. “People say: ‘Don’t change, Gem!’ But if I hadn’t developed a bit, I’d still be the mouthy cow I was when I was 15.” How mouthy was that? “Very. I was straight out of [Andrea Arnold's gritty 2009 film] Fish Tank.” Looking wicked, she proceeds to do a pitch-perfect impression of one of its characters – and the nicely spoken Arterton we know from the screen swiftly disappears. No wonder, then, that in spite of her extreme gorgeousness, she is able to travel to the theatre incognito, on the tube. “Yeah. In London, everyone is embroiled in their own lives. That’s the nice thing. In my yoga class the teacher said: ‘You probably get this all the time, but you really look like Gemma Arterton.’” She laughs. Did she confess in the end? Apparently so. Better to have your cover blown, she thinks, than to hear your yoga teacher say what a terrible actor you are.

I remember vividly the first time I saw Gemma Arterton on stage, early 2007. It was not a great play, in a dingy basement studio at drama school—the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art—and I had missed half a dinner party to be there, so I was quite grumpy. Gemma then walked on stage and shone out.

At the time, I was casting this British comedy called “St. Trinians,” with Rupert Everett, Colin Firth, and Russell Brand. The actress we had cast to play the lead girl had just dropped out, and I went from feeling awful about that to being literally thrilled by the opportunity to cast someone completely fresh and new.

Gemma did brilliantly in her auditions, held her own at a fairly intimidating table reading with Rupert Everett, and—with a little persuasion of the director and producer that casting a complete unknown as their leading lady was a good idea—she got the part. From the first day I met her, through those first auditions, and now with all the great and well-deserved success that she has had, Gemma has always been one of the most delightful, funny, charming, honest, and ballsy girls I have ever had the pleasure of spending time with. I absolutely adore her and love the fact she is doing so well.

Lucy Bevan got her first job, as a runner, by literally knocking on doors in Soho, London. She then became assistant to producer Sarah Radclyffe when Radclyffe made Tim Roth’s directorial debut, “The War Zone.” After a few years, Bevan decided her heart lay in the casting process. She worked for Mary Selway for four years, calling it “the finest training I could have wished for.” Bevan’s first film was “Chromophobia,” for Martha Fiennes, followed by “The Duchess,” the “St. Trinians” movies, and “An Education.” Recently she contributed to casting on “Pirates of the Caribbean 4.”

Gemma Arterton simply wowed on the red carpet for her film Clash of the Titans in Leicester Square last night. Showing off her fabulous figure in a bodycon dress by Gucci, Gemma teamed her LBD with a pair of ferocious black platforms.

The St. Trinian’s franchise has a long history in British pop culture. In the 1940s, illustrator Ronald Searle created the St. Trinian’s cartoon series about a fictional girls’ school constantly teetering on the edge of anarchy. Those cartoons became celebrated films in the 1950s, starting with The Belles of St. Trinian’s in 1954. Comic actor Alistair Sim played the school headmistress Miss Fritton (in full drag) and her brother Clarence.

I’ve been adding many HQ on-set photos from the first St. Trinian’s film lately and today was no exception.

Cinematical has just received this exclusive final USA one-sheet for St.Trinian’s, the British comedy that boasts a whole mixture of Brit talent from Talulah Riley and Gemma Arterton to Rupert Everett, Colin Firth, Russell Brand, and Lena Headey.

St. Trinian’s was released a few years ago in the UK, but America will finally get to see the bad girls in action stateside when it hits theaters on August 28.

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group has acquired U.S. video and TV rights to the U.K. hit comedy “St. Trinian’s” from independent theatrical distributor and foreign sales agent NeoClassics Films.

NeoClassics, which acquired U.S. rights to “St. Trinian’s” from Ealing Studios, will distribute the film theatrically in the U.S. this summer.

The remake of the 1950s Ealing classic “The Belles of St. Trinian’s” grossed more than $25 million in its U.K. theatrical run.

Directed by Oliver Parker and Barnaby Thompson and starring Colin Firth and Rupert Everett, “St. Trinian’s” tells the twisted story of a dysfunctional British girls’ boarding school and its equally twisted parents, teachers and administrators.

Rounding out the cast are Russell Brand, Gemma Arterton, Lena Headey, Caterina Murino and Stephen Fry.

Ealing Studios is set to produce a sequel this summer, “St. Trinian’s II: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold.”
