Dominic Cooper told New magazine about his favourite things. The actor loves ABBA, New Zealand and Gemma Arterton.

“She’s adorable. I loved working with her on Tamara Drewe. She’s such fun and as bad as me at Scrabble, which we played a lot! That’s a good thing, as there’s nothing worse than playing against someone who’s better than you! I loved being around her; she’s talented, very beautiful and she’s going to be huge.”

Gemma Arterton on voicing a cute turtle for A Turtle’s Tale

In just a few short years, she’s become one of Britain’s hottest young actresses. From parts in the Bond movie Quantum Of Solace to the blockbusting Clash Of The Titans and the British drama Tamara Drewe, Gemma Arterton has become a name on everyone’s lips.

Now the 25-year-old from Gravesend, Kent, lends her voice to the animated fantasy A Turtle’s Tale. Here, Gemma talks about her career and discusses what the future holds.

Did you identify with your character Shelley from A Turtle’s Tale?

Absolutely. If I was a turtle I’d be like her. When I filmed this I was doing a play so it was nice to do the complete opposite. Dominic Cooper, who does the voice of Sammy, is a friend of mine and we worked together on Tamara Drewe. He recommended me for the role. I was very grateful as I’ve always wanted to do an animation. For us it was just Dominic and Gemma swimming in the ocean.

Did you like the environmental message?

Of course. That’s one of the reasons I wanted to do it. It’s cleverly saying, “This is what’s happening to these poor animals that we care about and who are really cute”. It’s a good way of educating the children.

What was it like recording in a booth?

Oh, I really let go, especially when you have to do all the “woo-eee” noises and go crazy.

Would you go to see a film just because it’s in 3D?

Not particularly. I like watching a movie just as a movie. I’ve been in 3D films where it hasn’t particularly worked, but the technology really lends itself to animation. It’s a bit strange seeing my face in 3D, but when it’s a little cute turtle it’s fine.

Was making the film harder because you didn’t have other people to bounce off?

Yes, it was a bit and I suppose it’s harder to be spontaneous. But I had some good banter with Dominic. It can be quite isolating, but it was so quick fire – I did it in a day – that you don’t have time to think about it.

What other films do you have on the horizon?

I’m just about to start filming Hansel And Gretel which is a very dark version. I play Gretel and Jeremy Renner is playing Hansel. It’s when they’re 15 years older and I’m really excited about it. It’s a big role for me and quite a departure from anything I’ve done before.

Joan Collins said you’d make a great Alexis Carrington, the character she played in Dynasty.

I know, isn’t that great? Mainly I’m just very happy Joan Collins knew I existed as she’s such a diva and an icon. My mum loved Dynasty and when she heard it she was more excited than she’s ever been.

Can you remain incognito when not working?

Not in Gravesend, but in London absolutely. I walk everywhere and use the bus. People are very respectful of your privacy.

During downtime what hobbies do you pursue?

I’m obsessed with Bikram yoga and trampolining. But not at the same time, obviously!

Do you have a favourite memory, either from a movie set or the stage?

The best time I’ve had was recently on stage in The Master Builder with Stephen Dillane. Also when I filmed Tess Of The D’Urbervilles as I made the best friends on it and didn’t want it to end. The experience of making Tamara Drewe was, again, really good fun. We just had a great laugh in the British countryside.

Imperfections contribute to beauty, star says

English actress Gemma Arterton is a charming beauty with brains and character. She also knows about self-image and the “ugly duckling” aspect of her title character in the film Tamara Drewe.

Arterton, 25, was born with 12 fingers and a crumpled ear. Both situations were corrected by surgery as a child. So she is now a proponent of the credo: Beauty is found in imperfections.

“It’s funny, I have worked on what are extreme Hollywood movies that are ultra-glamourous and ultra-commercial. Prince of Persia especially, where it was all about everything being ‘just so’. … I don’t believe in beauty being ‘just so’. Imperfection is beauty.”

Gemma Arterton declares “Tamara Drewe” her favourite film

Her peaches and cream complexion, pillow lips, sprinkling of freckles and cockney sauciness have bowled over everyone from James Bond to Hollywood heavyweights, and left a number of British businessmen with neck ache.

When we meet on a wet London day, the 25-year-old actress – in stilettos and rolled-up boyfriend jeans – is standing under an umbrella on the front step of a city hotel, sucking on a cigarette and swearing into her mobile.

Businessmen teeming along the soaking street risk serious chiropractic injury to cop a double take of the luminous beauty.

Arterton, who is now cackling with laughter and screeching “bloody hell” into the phone, is oblivious to the head turning around her.

She is, she says once back inside the hotel, glad to be promoting her “favourite film so far” – the English comedy Tamara Drewe.

“I get to smooch three people in this film. Three!” she exclaims.

Since leaving drama school three years ago, Arterton has joined the likes of Carey Mulligan, Colin Firth and Andrew Garfield as the latest wave of British acting talent wining over Hollywood.

There was her breakthrough TV role, as Tess of the D’Urbervilles, for the BBC and her brief, yet naked, appearance as Strawberry Fields in 2008′s Quantum of Solace. In the past 12 months she has headlined two blockbusters, Clash of the Titans and Prince of Persia, squeezed in British kidnap thriller The Disappearance of Alice Creed, and a West End play, The Little Dog Laughed, not to mention getting married.

“I don’t know how I’ve done it,” she says.

Working with Tamara Drewe’s stellar British cast in the stunning Dorset scenery was the perfect antidote to mega-budget Hollywood, Arterton says.

“I just left drama school wide-eyed,” she says. “Every time I got a job I’d go ‘Yah!’ without even thinking about the job and the connotations.

“Now I’ve had time to reflect, I’ve realised I just want to make films I enjoy.

“You don’t just make the film, you have to live with it. And this has been my favourite film so far.

“The experience, the people, the beautiful location, brilliant script. It was everything a movie should be.”

Tamara Drewe’s other major attraction is British filmmaker Stephen Frears.

The 69-year-old director of The Queen and High Fidelity needed little convincing to pick Arterton as the title role of the film adaptation of Posy Simmonds’ beloved cartoon strip Tamara Drewe.

“She’s gorgeous, witty and a very good actress,” Frears says of Arterton. “She just had everything I needed, really.”

Arterton found Frears’ adoration difficult to process.

“That was flattering but I felt quite weird about it as well,” she says.

“He hadn’t seen any of my work, we just went for a coffee.

“I got a phone call saying Stephen Frears wants to meet you. He says ‘Oh hello, yes you look like her, you’ll do’.

“I said ‘but you haven’t seen me act, I would feel more comfortable if I read for you or something’. And he said ‘No, I know, I just know’.”

Set in the English countryside, Tamara Drewe is a middle-class comedy about a young journalist torn between multiple lovers.

But where Bridget Jones is bumbling and sweet, Tamara is hard to like.

“She’s a bit of a bitch, promiscuous, a tart and a bit insecure,” Arterton says.

“But this character is written by a woman for women and she is so real.”

The inspiration for Arterton’s Tamara was an Australian woman in her circle of friends.

“She had a nose job in Australia and came over to the UK with this amazing nose and had a whole new identity,” the actress says.

“She became this temptress and all women hated her because she’s sleeping with all the guys and she’s very successful, but she has absolutely no friends.

“She was always interesting as a person to me because I always thought ‘why can’t you just be you?”‘

In the film, Tamara deviates between sleeping with a married middle-aged novelist, an egotistical rock star and a hunky handyman.

While at times the film can come across as a Jilly Cooper rural romp, Tamara Drewe also presents a realistic take of a professionally successful but insecure young woman.

It’s a situation Arterton empathises with.

“She is a woman who does things without knowing why she does them. That is normal, it happens all the time. All women do it.”

Arterton, now married to fashion distributor Stefano Catelli, has found “solid happiness” in her life.

“When you are happy and you love and are loved so much neurosis goes,” she says. “Everything becomes much more straightforward and clear.”

She is even comfortable with her blossoming stardom and being the subject of celebrity-chasing paparazzi.

“I get papped occasionally, but literally people don’t know who I am and that suits me absolutely fine,” Arterton says. “I walk around London all the time and nobody notices me.”

A few chiropractors would disagree.

Arterton: ‘It’s nice to be taken seriously’

Gemma Arterton has said that her BAFTA ‘Rising Star’ nod shows that she is being taken seriously as an actress.

The Tamara Drewe star is competing for the gong with other nominees Andrew Garfield, Tom Hardy, Aaron Johnson and Emma Stone.

Arterton told Metro: “It’s just nice to been taken seriously… [and] not seen as just a sex symbol.

“This award is great because it’s not about one particular role, it’s about a body of work. I am proud that is being recognised.”

She added: “I am really excited. I am quite amazed actually. I can’t really believe it. I’m an old timer.

“I suppose for the rising star award you need a little bit of work behind you for them to celebrate – so people of note will know you. Last year I had four movies out but I have been around for three years.”

Gemma Arterton’s Italian Affair

Gemma Arterton, 24 year old Bond girl and British rising star; most recently seen in blockbuster Tamara Drewe (in Italy out on the 5th of January), an adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s nineteenth century novel Far from the Madding Crowd; speaks to Swide about her love of Italian style and adopted nuances from her new Italian husband.

Swide: What projects are you currently working on Gemma?

Gemma: Currently I’m working on a play called “The Master Builder” by Ibsen. We’re about midway through the run and it’s playing at the Almeida Theatre in Islington, London.

Swide: You’ve worn Dolce and Gabbana to many premieres and events, what dress holds the most memories for you?

Gemma: My favourite Dolce and Gabbana dress was a full length gold gown that I wore to a special tribute to Ian Flemming. I really felt like a Bond Girl, which was totally appropriate for the event!

Swide: Do any parts of Italy hold particular personal resonance for you?

Gemma: My husband [Stefano Catelli, a sales manager, whom Gemma married at a private ceremony in Andalucia, Spain this June] is from Lake Como, so I have lots of friends and family who live there and we go there often. It is one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Swide: What’s your favourite Italian meal, date and perfect location?

Gemma: My favourite Italian meal would be anything with truffle! I recently visited Positano with my husband and we had the most incredible food. Everything was so flavourful and fresh. I would eat that food, there, with my husband, every single day!

Swide: With an Italian husband, are you now fluent in the language? What’s your favourite colloquial phrase?

Gemma: I wish I was fluent! I’m having lessons, so hopefully fluency is not too far away! My favourite phrase is, “Amore della mia vita, luce dei miei occhi, gioia mia infinita…topolino!” [" Love of my life, light of my eyes, joy my infinite one… topolino! "] My husband taught me to say it to him!

Swide: How would you define Italian style? What makes it different from British style in your opinion?

Gemma: Italian style is much more about quality and cut, I think. British style is much more eclectic, eccentric and often governed by trend and music; whereas Italian style is much more timeless.

“Tamara Drewe” opens Sydney Moonlight Cinema on Thursday

The film Tamara Drewe will open Sydney Moonlight Cinema for a preview screening on Thursday December 9.

It is based on Posy Simmonds’ much loved novel of the same name.

Gemma Arterton starred in the title role that is is a witty, modern look at life in the English countryside, with pompous writers, rich weekenders, bourgeois bohemians and the odd cow and chicken thrown in for good measure.

When Tamara (Arterton) returns to her childhood home of Ewedown in Dorset to sell her late mother’s house, the ugly duckling the villagers remember has transformed into a devasting beauty.

This triggers a collision of infatuations, jealousies and love affairs among the inhabitants of the neighbouring farmsteads.

Ford Fiesta Moonlight Cinema is at Centennial Park, Belvedere Amphitheatre with entry via Woollahra gate off Oxford Street.
