The film Tamara Drewe will open Sydney Moonlight Cinema for a preview screening on Thursday December 9.

It is based on Posy Simmonds’ much loved novel of the same name.

Gemma Arterton starred in the title role that is is a witty, modern look at life in the English countryside, with pompous writers, rich weekenders, bourgeois bohemians and the odd cow and chicken thrown in for good measure.

When Tamara (Arterton) returns to her childhood home of Ewedown in Dorset to sell her late mother’s house, the ugly duckling the villagers remember has transformed into a devasting beauty.

This triggers a collision of infatuations, jealousies and love affairs among the inhabitants of the neighbouring farmsteads.

Ford Fiesta Moonlight Cinema is at Centennial Park, Belvedere Amphitheatre with entry via Woollahra gate off Oxford Street.

Toronto — She’s appeared in two wide-release films this year. One earned $493 million worldwide. The other made $335 million.

She’s all of 24 years old.

Meet Gemma Arterton, possibly the biggest star you’ve never heard of.

She’s been on a career rocket ship of sorts for the past three years after her graduation from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

“It’s been quite bizarre. I think I’ve done 11 films, four TV jobs and two plays in three years,” she says. “Only three of those, four maybe, are notable. But it’s all been kind of a massive learning curve for me.” Read the rest of this entry »

TORONTO – “Life sure comes easy for the beautiful,” quips one rueful soul in “Tamara Drewe,” gazing at the title character – played by the unarguably beautiful Gemma Arterton – as she bobs around the English countryside, turning heads, and turning a peaceful writers’ retreat into a cauldron of lust.

And here, at the Toronto Film Festival in September, Arterton and her director, Stephen Frears, were on hand to premiere their larky farce. Adapted from Posy Simmonds’ British comic strip, which, in turn, was inspired by Thomas Hardy’s “Far From the Madding Crowd,” the movie follows Tamara as she returns to her Dorset village a changed young woman. Like Cyrano de Bergerac, the teenage Tamara had a rather prominent proboscis, but thanks to a cosmetic surgeon, the nose is now perfect – and, so, a married, middle-aged mystery writer (Roger Allam) and a cocky rock star (Dominic Cooper) find themselves in vigorous pursuit of the more grown-up and gorgeous girl.

“My wife and my casting director told me about Gemma,” says Frears, the veteran director, over coffee one morning. “I said, ‘Is she any good?’ And they said, ‘Yes.’ I said, ‘Then book her!’ ” Read the rest of this entry »

British filmmakers can be a downright curmudgeonly lot — Stephen Frears is one example, with Mike Leigh trailing close behind — but the vast majority of actors from the U.K. tend to be utterly charming and down-to-earth.

Gemma Arterton and Dominic Cooper, for instance, are more than happy to climb onto a hotel bed with a reporter and photographer to conduct an interview about their latest film, Tamara Drewe. They don’t make a fuss when a string of phone calls interrupt the conversation, they ask as many questions as they answer and, on the whole, are entirely likable.

Their characters, however, are a different story. Read the rest of this entry »
