FemaleFirst reports the recent words pronounced by Gemma Arterton on her ‘former’ role as Cathy in Wuthering Heights:

Gemma Arterton is not starring in a big screen remake of Wuthering Heights.
It had been reported that Arterton was all set to star as Catherine Earnshaw in the Andrea Arnold directed movie alongside Ed Westwick as Heathcliff.
Speaking to MSN.com the actress said:”I was hoping that that would work out, but actually she’s looking for a pure Yorkshire lass – so any Yorkshire lasses out there who want to be Cathy in Wuthering Heights, she’s doing open auditioning.”
She added: “I think she [Arnold] will make the best Wuthering Heights film ever, she’s such an amazing director.”

Fish Tank director Andrea Arnold has taken over the reins of the new film adaptation of Wuthering Heights.

Director Peter Webber left the project back in December, meaning cast Gemma Arterton and Gossip Girl’s Ed Westwick officially had nobody to yell at them from behind the camera.

Arnold, who won an Oscar back in 2005 for her short film Wasp, will be adding her version of Heights to the numerous others, including the Laurence Olivier classic from 1939, and Ralph Fiennes’ stab back in 1992.

Peter Webber is no longer attached to direct Ecosse Films’ adaptation of the classic Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. A replacement has yet to be announced.

Speaking to ScreenDaily, Webber’s agent confirmed that the Girl With The Pearl Earring director is no longer involved with the film, which is set to star Gemma Arterton and Ed Westwick as lovers Cathy and Heathcliffe.

The film is being scripted by Olivia Hetreed, who teamed up with Webber on Girl With a Pearl Earring. Ecosse Films’ Robert Bernstein is producing with HanWay Films handling worldwide sales.

Producer Timothy Burrill confirmed that Webber is still attached to direct his project, The Spider’s House, an adaptation of Paul Bowles’ novel set in Morocco, which is currently in development.

Webber signed on to the project in May this year although it was previously reported that John Maybury, who directed Francis Bacon biopic Love Is The Devil, was attached.

Success of the Twilight saga books and films inspire new productions of Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre.

The Brontës are back in fashion – with a bit of help from Bella Swan. New films of Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre will shoot next spring, and a script about the teenage fantasies of the four Brontë siblings is in the works.

The film-makers are piggybacking off the success of the Twilight saga, which has sparked a renewed enthusiasm among financiers for gothic romance; the Brontës in particular. Wuthering Heights is one of Twilight heroine Bella Swan’s favourite books, frequently referenced in the third episode Eclipse, whose storyline is inspired by Emily Brontë’s only novel.

RISING star Gemma Arterton is reported to have landed one of cinema’s greatest romantic roles, writes LESLEY-ANN JONES.

She is said to have been cast as Cathy Earnshaw in a big screen remake of Emily Bronte’s novel Wuthering Heights, a part made famous in the 1939 version by screen siren Merle Oberon.

Gemma, 23, whose screen credits have ranged from special agent Strawberry Fields in the latest James Bond film Quantum of Solace to head girl Kelly in St Trinian’s, taking in that other tragic heroine Tess of the D’Urbervilles for television along the way, is said to have beaten Sienna Miller for the part.

Arterton, Westwick join Ecosse project

Gemma Arterton and Ed Westwick will play Cathy and Heathcliff in Ecosse Films’ adaptation of Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights.”

Peter Webber will direct the pic after original helmer John Maybury ankled.

Project has also seen a number of cast changes. Natalie Portman was originally tapped to play the role of Cathy. Scheduling conflicts saw her exit the project before being replaced by Abbie Cornish. Arterton will now play the iconic romantic role after producers opted to go younger with the pic.

Ecosse Films’ Robert Bernstein and Douglas Rae will produce the film with HanWay Films handling the international sales.
