This November, witness the magnificent Amazon rainforest through the lens of two award-winning photographers – Sebastião Salgado and Per-Anders Pettersson. London’s Somerset House is hosting an inaugural exhibition at their new East Wing galleries in aid of Sky Rainforest Rescue, from 2 November to 4 December.

The free exhibition features unseen images of the Amazon’s pristine habitats, from Salgado’s photo essay, ‘Genesis’, while Pettersson’s images document a recent trip to Acre with actress Gemma Arterton. Together they highlight what’s at stake if we don’t take action to preserve this spectacular part of the world.

Below, Per-Anders Pettersson tells you all you need to know about ‘AMAZON’, and what you didn’t know about Gemma Arterton’s hidden talent…

What’s this exhibition all about? “It’s about highlighting the plight of the Amazon rainforest, and it gives insight into progress made by Sky Rainforest Rescue to protect this amazing and fragile part of the world.”

What can visitors expect to experience? “Some of the images will help visitors understand the deforestation first hand. Others show the reality of life in the poor communities of the region, and some of the innovative solutions to deforestation that WWF and Sky are using.”

What impact do you hope your work will have? “I hope it will further highlight this issue and lead many people to get involved in this cause. Somerset House will be a fantastic venue to attract a large amount of people. My work is normally from Africa so this was an opportunity to point my camera in another part of the world.”

What’s it like working with Gemma Arterton? “Gemma was great! I have worked with many celebrities before and I can only say that the experience was absolutely a pleasure. She is genuinely interested in the cause and she has a remarkable warm way of interacting with people. We hiked together for hours and she never complained. We had a lot of work to do but we also had a lot of fun during the trip. And she is a great singer!!”

Your best memory from the trip to Acre? “Although visiting remote villages and projects was amazing, the most rewarding and powerful was flying over the vast landscape. Flying and shooting images as the sun rises – an absolutely unforgettable experience. It’s surely one of the most amazing places I’ve ever been to in the world.”

‘AMAZON’ is free and open to the public from 2 November to 4 December at Somerset House in London.

Dramatic Need presents “The Children’s Monologues”

Oscar winner Ben Kingsley is one of a host of film and television big-hitters taking part in a one-off theatre performance at London’s Old Vic.
Kingsley, Gemma Arterton and Benedict Cumberbatch among others give voice to the true stories of South African children in The Children’s Monologues.
The drama is in aid of director Danny Boyle’s arts charity Dramatic Need, which works with young people in Rwanda and South Africa helping them come to terms with trauma and conflict.

WWF film “Astonish Me” launches starring Nighy & Arterton

WWF has released a new short film, ‘Astonish Me‘, starring Bill Nighy and Gemma Arterton to showcase some of the new species that have recently been found around the globe.

Created by acclaimed writer Stephen Poliakoff and director Charles Sturridge ‘Astonish Me‘ showcases some of the incredible new species recently discovered around the world.

The 5 minute film which is now being shown in ODEON cinemas across the UK takes viewers on a journey showcasing some of the world’s lesser known or recently discovered species, from massive insects to colossal squid, a fish with a transparent head and birds and frogs of every colour.

A spokesperson for WWF said: “Astonish Me is a truly unique project which we hope will inspire a whole new generations of conservationists.”

Gemma Arterton talks new G-Star at Bread & Butter Berlin

G-star RAW recently teamed up with Vice Style for their fourth collaborative film to celebrate G-Star’s ongoing relationship with Gemma Arterton, as she fronts the brand’s womenswear for a second season. In this installment, Kim Taylor-Bennett flies out to Berlin to meet the actress at G-star’s Bread & Butter show and chats to her on G-Star’s RAW Ferry 01—a tricked-out boat that looks more plush than anywhere any of the Vice Style staff live.

Between exclusive footage of renowned photographer Anton Corbijn shooting the campaign for G-Star’s new S/S 12 collection, Gemma discusses the brand and gives Kim some of her own personal style tips. As it happens, Gemma says the new campaign is, “Very much how I dress on a day to day basis”, reinforcing G-Star’s notion of Gemma as the perfect encapsulation of “modern, independent womanhood”.

“Astonish Me” Trailer

Watch an exclusive trailer for WWF’s short film, Astonish Me. The film, from acclaimed writer Stephen Poliakoff and director Charles Sturridge, showcases some of the extraordinary species recently found around the world and has been made to celebrate the wildlife charity’s 50th anniversary. It will debut on July 29 exclusively in Odeon cinemas across the UK, and be shown before screenings of this year’s summer blockbusters.

WWF says that 15,000 new species are discovered every year. Among them such creatures as the barreleye with its unique transparent forehead and rotating eyes, an over half a meter long Chan’s megastick and the colossal squid. WWF invites people to check their website ‘for exclusive sneak peeks, interviews with the cast and crew, amazing behind-the-scenes footage and to find out more about the making of Astonish Me Competition’. As well as to win in the ‘Oddest One Out’ photo competition.

To win competitors have to guess which the ‘fake’ creature on one of the three photos. The main prize is a conservation trip to find out how new species discoveries are made, explore wildlife and go behind the scenes at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. Other prizes include limited edition Astonish Me posters, WWF memberships, Odeon cinema tickets and more.

Gemma Arterton – star of Quantum of Solace, Prince of Persia, Clash of the Titans and Tamara Drewe – has been speaking to FILMCLUB, the nationwide education charity, about her role in the new animated feature film A Turtles Tale.

FILMCLUB sent two lucky Young Ambassador’s, Erin and Elliot, to chat to the Hollywood star about the new film, what it was like to play an animated character, what inspired her to get involved in the project, and what research did she do on sea turtles to help her get into character.

A Turtle’s Tale is a 3D animation that charts the adventures of Sammy the sea turtle as he swims the ocean in search of his lost love.

After hatching on a Californian beach, Sammy heads for the sea where he finds and loses the love of his life, Shelly.

Setting out on an epic journey, the tenacious turtle must battle hungry piranhas, escape a fearsome fish eagle and find a secret passage if he is to be reunited with Shelly.

A Turtle’s Tale is released in UK cinemas on 25 March 2011.
