With hundreds of millions of dollars at stake, you can see why the studios and producers behind the James Bond films want to keep plot and cast details under wraps for as long as possible.

Some cast members are finding levels of secrecy befitting a super spy somewhat scary, however.

Gemma Arterton, who plays Agent Fields in the upcoming Quantum of Solace, was asked by reporters this week about the plot of the new movie. Apart from telling us that she meets Bond in Bolivia, and that there is “a lot of oil” involved, she gives little away.

Arterton, who starred in the recent comedy St. Trinian’s, explained how each copy of the script was individually named, so that should one go missing, the studio would be able to identify the guilty party.

“You have to work out what you can and cannot say,” she said. “It’s quite hard for me who has a bit of a motor mouth. I’ve been learning for the last six months to think before I speak.”

Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson said the title of “Bond 22” was easy to keep secret because they only thought it up a few days before the official press launch on Thursday. Even so, some Web sites devoted to all things Bond had correctly guessed the new name well before that.

When Daniel Craig was unveiled as the new Bond in 2005 amid major fanfare, the cat was already out of the bag. His mother had told a regional newspaper earlier in the day.
