NEW YORK—After her stint as a Bond girl in Quantum of Solace opposite Daniel Craig, English actress Gemma Arterton, who will now be seen in the epic Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time with Sir Ben Kingsley, says “everything has happened very quickly”. “Since the Bond film came out, everything has happened very quickly, I’m really starting to feel it. Usually I can get on with my work and not think about it but it’s actually had an effect on my life now,” Gemma said.
“It is mad what has happened in a year. In a year I think I’ve done eight films. I don’t know how I’ve done it though,” added the actress who was last seen in the fantasy epic Clash of the Titans opposite Sam Worthington. Asked how has it been to work with actors like Craig and Sir Kinglsey, she said, “It is absolutely inspiring. I tend to go into things head first and not really think about what I am doing, which is sometimes better than going, ‘Oh my goodness, I’m just about to act with Sir Ben Kingsley’”.
“Then you are yourself and that’s what they want ultimately anyway. You’re just another actor working with them on a film. It’s brilliant but I don’t think I get too worried about it. I probably should, when I’m being all cheeky and scampy with Sir Ben Kingsley, but no, it’s brilliant and an honour,” she added. Inspired by the best-selling video game series, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has been directed by Mike Newell. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, the epic action-adventure fantasy also stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Alfred Molina.
Set in the mystical lands of Persia, the movie is about a rogue prince and a mysterious princess who race against dark forces to safeguard an ancient dagger capable of releasing the sands of time – a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world. Gemma plays Tamina, a high priestess in the movie who teams up with the prince to save the dagger. The 24-year-old also shared she has action sequences in the movie, unlike her role in the Bond outing.
“Agent Fields (her role) in James Bond didn’t really have any action. In this I have a lot of action. But Tamina is a High Priestess, so she is not your typical gun-wielding character. She’s never been trained to fight,” she said. “(But) when I went to drama school, I trained in stage combat quite heavily so I had a bit of experience before… I loved doing the fighting. (In fact) I love all the action stuff. I think I should have really been a stunt woman. I really enjoy it,” she added.
“I had to learn how to ride horses as I’d never done it before in my life and it’s become a real new passion for me,” she said. Gemma made her big screen debut in the 2007 remake of St Trinian’s and was then seen in movies like Three And Out and Guy Ritchie’s RocknRolla before her big leap with Quantum of Solace.
She was then seen in The Boat That Rocked, St. Trinian’s II: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold, Clash of the Titans and The Disappearance of Alice Creed.
