After months of speculation and rumors, Gemma Arterton has officially signed on to play Gretel opposite Jeremy Renner’s Hansel in Paramount’s dark fantasy “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters”, based on the Grimm fairytale. Previously, the role had been rumored to have been snagged by “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” breakout star Noomi Rapace but as with these things, nothing’s official until deals have been signed. Eva Green and Diane Kruger were also in the running, but ultimately Arterton will be Gretel, according to THR.
Funnily enough, this film is not one of the dozens that Arterton has mentioned being attached to recently, which include the likes of “Capa” with Andrew Garfield, “London Fields”, “The Key to the Street” and more. One movie she is definitely attached to is the sequel to “Clash of the Titans”, “Wrath of the Titans”, in which she will reprise her role as Io. Renner is currently shooting “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” opposite Tom Cruise and will be on deck to play Hawkeye in “The Avengers” so scheduling around the two busy careers will be an issue for the studio.
