Gemma Arterton surprised her co-star Jake Gyllenhaal after shoving her tongue in his mouth while filming kissing scenes for their upcoming movie Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.

The actress, who plays a sixth century princess to Gyllenhaal’s prince, couldn’t help but inject some passion into their smooch – despite the pair’s shared understanding that their embraces would remain relatively tame.

Arterton recalls, “There’s an unspoken no-tongues rule on set. But I got so carried away, it kind of slipped out.”

But the former Bond girl maintains the pleasure was all Gyllenhaal’s: “Everyone said I was lucky to be snogging (kissing) him, but he’s the lucky one!”

Box office behemoth The Dark Knight is the favourite to emerge victorious at the 14th annual Empire awards, after the nominations were announced.

Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins sequel – which won two Oscars last weekend – has four nominations for the film magazine’s awards, sponsored by Jameson.

The best newcomer award, meanwhile, will be contested between Twilight star Robert Pattinson, St Trinian’s actress Gemma Arterton, Across the Universe‘s Jim Sturgess, RocknRolla actor Toby Kebbell and Brideshead Revisited cast member Hayley Attwell.

“These nominations, unlike those of other awards shows, truly reflect the power and diversity of cinema,” said Empire editor Mark Dinning.

Furthermore, Gemma’s films RocknRolla and Quantum of Solace are also nominated for various awards.

The British film industry is riding the crest of a wave of success and style that will reach a climax at the Orange British Academy Film Awards this coming Sunday.

Bafta commissioned a new British Talent photo-shoot for the official awards gala brochure. We present a preview here, revealing some of the faces that star in front of and behind the cameras in this 21st-century film and film-making renaissance.

James Bond girl Gemma Arterton makes a revealing appearance in an Escada bustier dress, even more daring than the cleavage-busting Balmain gown she chose for the Quantum of Solace premiere in London in October.
