Plot Outline:
Quantum of Solace continues the high octane adventures of James Bond in Casino Royale. Betrayed by Vesper, the woman he loved, 007 fights the urge to make his latest mission personal. Pursuing his determination to uncover the truth, Bond and M interrogate Mr White who reveals the organisation which blackmailed Vesper is far more complex and dangerous than anyone had imagined.
Forensic intelligence links an Mi6 traitor to a bank account in Haiti where a case of mistaken identity introduces Bond to the beautiful but feisty Camille, a woman who has her own vendetta. Camille leads Bond straight to Dominic Greene, a ruthless business man and major force within the mysterious organisation.
On a mission that leads him to Austria, Italy and South America, Bond discovers that Greene, conspiring to take total control of one of the world’s most important natural resources, is forging a deal with the exiled General Medrano. Using his associates in the organisation, and manipulating his powerful contacts within the CIA and the British government, Greene promises to overthrow the existing regime in a Latin American country, giving the General control of the country in exchange for a seemingly barren piece of land.
In a minefield of treachery, murder and deceit, Bond allies with old friends in a battle to uncover the truth. As he gets closer to finding the man responsible for the betrayal of Vesper, 007 must keep one step ahead of the CIA, the terrorists and even M, to unravel Greene’s sinister plan and stop his organisation.
Gemma’s Role:
Gemma Arterton has been tapped to be one of the next generation of “Bond girls”. She plays MI6 Agent Strawberry Fields. She works for the British Consulate and she will work with Bond (Daniel Craig). Basically, she is tasked with trying to “keep Bond under control”. They will meet in Bolivia, and there will be “a lot of oil” involved. Fields is “very typically Fleming”: she is very independent and a strong woman. She is a “bit snooty”, but “very, very cute”. Gemma described her role as “not so frolicksome” and her character “fresh and young, not sultry and a femme fatale”. Despite Arterton insisting her character in the movie isn’t “hot”, she believes she has a certain humble charm that will interest most men. She says, “There is a formula to Bond women. They’re his women. You just have to make them your own in any way you can. To the normal guy, they’re unobtainable but I didn’t want that. I wanted my character to be a girl from down the road who does this job – we don’t know exactly what she does but she goes to work every day – and comes back and she goes down the pub at the weekend and has a drink.” She adds, “At first you might think she was a bit of a snooty bitch but she’s actually quite nice when you get to know her. I wanted to make her real. She’s not hot but I hope there’s a charm to her.” “The last Bond film did so amazingly. I was worried about whether I was going to live up to it. But I got the part over 7,000 people, so I just thought, I must be all right.”
