Plot Outline:
Runner, Runner stars Justin Timberlake as a Princeton student who is cheated out of his tuition playing online poker. He finds out the website he used is hosted from a remote island location and confronts Ben Affleck’s character, who runs the whole thing. But Timberlake is soon lured into being Affleck’s right-hand man, while an FBI agent (Anthony Mackie) tries to use him to bring Affleck down.
Gemma’s Role:
Gemma Arterton plays Ivan Block’s (Ben Affleck) secretary Rebecca Shafran, who becomes Timberlake’s love interest in the film.
“It’s a thriller about online gambling in central America and the dirty, filthy underworld of that. Ben Affleck is in it, and I play his right hand woman I guess, and also it’s a bit sleazy — our relationship. Justin Timberlake is the hero of the piece; there are some great actors in it — Anthony Mackie who was in The Hurt Locker — he’s brilliant. It’s all very sexy and shot by the guy that shot Avatar [Mauro Fiore] so it has a film noir feel to it — that dirty bling world.” (IndieWire – December 13, 2012)
Speaking to the Chicago Sun Times (January 23, 2013), Gemma added: “I have equal amount of scenes with Ben and Justin. I just have a horrible life! [She laughs.] It’s actually a great cast and a good script. I play a very clever, witty girl who is also a powerful, strong woman. It’s set in Costa Rica in this seedy underworld.
Both of the guys were funny and neither took himself too seriously. I can tell you that in the film one of them is in love with me… and the other is in love with me as well.
Maybe there are a few steamy love scenes. You’ll have to wait and see.”
