MIRROR.CO.UK – Actress Gemma Arterton and singers Paloma Faith and Annie Lennox urged women to vote as they joined two of the Pankhurst Suffragette family and the Mirror’s #NoVoteNoVoice bus on the Walk In Her Shoes march.
Annie Lennox told thousands of women at London’s Tower Bridge: “You’re potential change-makers. You have so many more rights than so many women.”
She was joined by Radio One’s Gemma Cairney, broadcaster Sandi Toksvig, politicians from across the political divide and human rights campaigners, who came together as “21st Century Suffragettes” to mark International Women’s Day.
Speaking to the Mirror, Paloma Faith said that women “fought long and hard for us to have a voice”.
She added: “Being here with the descendants of suffragettes and hearing what their families fought for – it sounds a bit cheap to say I didn’t vote because nobody really appeals to me.”
Radio 1’s Gemma Cairney said she understood why young people fel so disengaged from politics. “But I want to say: use your vote, use your voice. Don’t let others speak for you.”
The march was led by Helen Pankhurst – great-granddaughter of Emmeline and granddaughter of Sylvia – and her daughter Laura, 19.
Walk In her Shoes wants people to pledge 10,000 steps a day for a week to show support for women around the world who regularly trudge miles for water.

Stars including Debbie Harry, Gemma Arterton and Simon Pegg are putting the T into charity by signing up to help Comic Relief.
They posed for pictures in a range of special t-shirts designed by some of fashion’s biggest names including Anya Hindmarch, Karl Lagerfeld and Matthew Williamson. The t-shirts – and a onesie designed by Henry Holland – will go on sale at TK Maxx stores with a share of the proceeds going to Comic Relief. (source)
