Move over, the Cusacks, there’s a new sister act in town. And between them they look to have the future of British musicals sewn up. This weekend Hannah Arterton makes her film debut in Walking on Sunshine, a sunny, 1980s-pop-soaked musical that is aiming to be this summer’s Mamma Mia!. It will be followed in the autumn by Made in Dagenham, a big-budget West End show from the people behind Jerry Springer: The Opera and Enron, which will star Gemma Arterton.

At 25, Hannah is the younger sister by three years. Blonde hair aside, there’s a clear family resemblance – the same snub nose and feline eyes, the same estuary vowels, throaty chuckle and girl-next-door charm. What’s more striking is the spookily similar way in which both got their big break. Both went from the Miskin Theatre School in Dartford to Rada and both were plucked from final-year obscurity there by Stephen Poliakoff. Gemma appeared in his BBC drama Capturing Mary in 2007; four years later Hannah landed a part in My City at the Almeida Theatre.

Now that they both have leads in high-profile musicals, is it about to get a bit competitive between them? “No, no, no, not at all”, says Arterton, fiddling with a tiny axe charm on her necklace. So far, her big sister has been nothing but supportive. When Hannah was 18 she lived in Gemma’s London flat, auditioning for drama school and working in a Camden shoe-shop by day, cat-sitting by night as her sister roamed film sets and red carpets around the world. Sometimes, she got an invitation to join her. Her “work experience” the summer before she started at Rada was two weeks on the set of Prince of Persia, and she has had her share of plus-ones to award ceremonies and premieres. “Two girls who grew up on a council estate, sipping champagne next to Helen Mirren. Nutty,” she says.

In other words, the Arterton dynamic is more Kylie and Dannii Minogue than it is Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland. “She [Gemma] was so incredibly successful, very quickly. I might be making this up but I think she is the most successful female graduate of Rada ever”, says Arterton. “She finished early, got a part in a film and then was just… off.” A tough act to follow, then? “I thought: ‘Oh god, I’m going to go to Rada and everyone is going to think I want to be on her coat-tails.’ But we’re so different. We have very different energies. I don’t think we’d ever be up for the same part.” Read More

One of the weirder delights of 2013 was Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, a zany horror-comedy that imagined what might have become of the lost children after they killed that candy house-owning witch. Though Paramount Pictures buried the film in January and made critics screenings hard to come by, the wild re-imagining of the German fairy tale became a box office success worthy of another adventure.

JoBlo reports Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2 is officially a go, and marked for a 2016 debut. That is all Paramount is revealing at this time. Still, it’s news that will be heralded among those–like myself–who found this purposely preposterous movie pretty awesome.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters marked the English-language debut of Norwegian director Tommy Wirkola, who made a name for himself with Dead Snow. This twisted horror comedy that featured Nazi zombies (or zombie Nazis?) drew the attention of Gary Sanchez Production’s Kevin Messick, who showed the film to Adam McKay. From there, McKay met with Wirkola to see if they might collaborate on his next production. Wirkola pitched Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, and McKay and his producing partner Will Ferrell were instant fans.

Still, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters had a rocky road to its release. Production began in March of 2011, with a release date initially set up for March 2, 2012. But Paramount later bumped it to January 11th of 2013, then January 25th. And with each bump, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters’ buzz was hurt. By the time it finally hit theaters, its failure with critics and audiences seemed a self-fulfilling prophecy. But while the film was slammed by most critics–a response McKay has called “lazy” and predictable–it did well with audiences. The $50 million picture made a modest $55 mil domestically, but overseas this hard-R fairy tale pulled in $170 million.

As a defender and fan of Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, I was thrilled to talk with Adam McKay for its Blu-ray release. At which point, he told me a little of what fans might expect from its then-promised sequel:

“Well, I’m not going to tell you specifically. I know what the storyline is but I will say—I’ll give one hint. Think of different kinds of witchcraft.”

Beyond that, I inquired about whether the film’s stars, Gemma Arterton and Jeremy Renner, are signed on for a sequel. McKay answered:

“I don’t think deals, and dates and schedules have been done. In fact, I’m positive that hasn’t been done. But there have been early discussions, and both of them loved working with Tommy. So, you know, Jeremy and Gemma are both very busy actors and we’re just starting on the script right now. So, everything is in its early stages. But I know they had the best time doing the movie and really loved the way it played worldwide. Everyone feels like as good as the first one is, we can really jack it up a level with the second one. So, fingers crossed everyone will come back.”

If Arterton and Renner are coming back for Hansel & Gretel 2: Witch Hunters, Paramount has chosen to withhold that announcement for now. We’d assume Tommy Wirkola would return, as the first film was described as a major passion project. But for now, that too is unconfirmed.

Gemma Arterton is set to star alongside Idris Elba in ONE SQUARE MILE. Elba is also producing the drama that follows a series of misplaced characters from a wide range of backgrounds as their lives cross paths. It’s a little light on plot details, but we know it’s set in London and revolves around love, action and gangsters. (source)
